As we physically return to school this year, my students are coming back after six months of being on their own. While some have had safe and healthy environments during covid-19, many have not. My job is to provide them an opportunity to learn. Learning can only come after we build relationships, community and a true sense of safety and belonging. This year I feel that it is especially important for me to provide my kids a sense of home. Home to me is a calm, safe, green place where I am valued and inspired, and this is what I want to give all my kids this year. I hope to create a sense of family, even with social distancing limitations, by having a consistently calm theme in my classroom. I will use greenery, live plants, muted farmhouse colors and a small kitchen table to create a true 'home' for my kids that have lived in fear, hunger or sadness for months and need a sense of home the most. Engagement in science and inspiration to reach for the stars will truly come when my students experience a comfortable, modern and welcoming classroom. I hope to use these materials to create this sense of home in our learning environment. Student work will be highlighted on these bulletin boards, hung overhead with the greenery/twine and birthdays/events recorded on our calendar. Students will enter our room and feel as though they are coming home for the day, where they can be themselves, care for plants/animals, hang their photos and find their voice.
