I don't yet know what the 2020-2021 school year will look like, but whether I'm teaching remotely or in person, I want my students to be able to be able to see themselves and others in the books we read together. Children need to feel seen and reading diverse picture books together is one way that I can help. I have always loved reading and have been privileged to see myself in the characters of so many of the books I that I have read; I want my first graders to have that same opportunity. I want my kids to see characters that look, talk, run and walk like them doing everyday things and tackling everyday battles.
