Distance learning this year is inevitable, and I want my students to be prepared, engaged, and empowered by the novel I am choosing for them to read. By choosing a novel that my students will relate to, they will be highly engaged, and it will help me teach the necessary skills while they are reading and learning from home. I know this novel will empower my students because they are able to relate to the content. Many of my students are Hispanic or LatinX, and sadly, there are not many novels where my students can see themselves represented. This novel does just that, and there is nothing more empowering than seeing yourself in the pages of a book. Due to this pandemic, we are facing, a class set of novels will not suffice and will not meet the needs of all my students. Unfortunately, many of my students lack the funds to buy basic supplies for class, so I know buying this novel will be difficult.
