Our students have engaged in asking critical questions about our communities and society at large. They have expressed powerful messages against police brutality, have asked their neighbors to wear masks appropriately to contain COVID-19 spread, and are concerned with food access. We are looking for quality texts to both reflect and serve as windows to be inclusive of everyone who makes up our communities. As we move up to first grade together and will continue to delve deeper in to critically analyzing the world, we plan to use these books as mentor texts to help support us as we express our arguments for equity. Through this, our learners will develop an understanding for telling a message, voice, using examples, and expressing their joy.
