Our school district has recently discussed and offered having a hybrid model of attending school with both distance learning and in class instruction. If our students are going to attend class they will be in danger of contracting the virus given safety precautions are not always followed. To compound the problem, a majority of my STEAM students are in the lower socioeconomic levels and Latinx. Current statistics in CA show our Latinx populations being the leader in both contraction of the virus and death and are 4x more likely to be hospitalized and/or perish from the virus compared to their Caucasian classmates (CDC/CDPH 2020). The Blueair 211+ filter contains HEPASilent technology. Even on the lowest setting, all Blueair purifiers capture 99.97% of airborne bacteria and virus particles down to 0.1 micron in size. Due to a combination of mechanical and electrostatic filtration, fine particles, such as bacteria and viruses, are easily captured and removed from the air. Additionally, their filters use naturally antibacterial polypropylene fibers, so they'll never grow their own bacteria. All Blueair purifiers come standard with a Particle filter, designed to trap bacteria and viruses. With SARS-CoV-2 being about ~0.12 microns this filter should effectively capture and kill the virus moving all the air in the classroom through itself 5x in a single hour. This will greatly increase the chances of keeping my STEAM students safe especially those who are low socioeconomic and Latinx.
