I fully believe the only way we create kind and empathetic people is through literature---and not just any literature, either. Students must first find texts that reflect themselves. This is the key to feeling inclusive in the classroom. Without books that reflect who they are, students feel ostracized and not involved in the classroom environment as they should be. Empathy is built through reading about others who we may not understand. These books will allow students to find that in my classroom. With the current events happening, everyone needs a little more empathy and kindness. There is no way to create a better society without pushing our students to reflect and understand those who are different. This is how we begin.
