These sets of books will allow me to engage small groups of students around a common book. Where they can question, challenge the status quo, and learn about diverse groups of people and places they may never have encountered. It will also allow me to meet all students' needs from challenging my high achievers to supporting my struggling readers. Students will be engaged in their chosen book with a small group of peers, where they will discuss and question using higher-level thinking. Research says book choice elevates reading engagement. And we all know readers become leaders! In my classroom, I am dedicated to making sure my students promote to the next grade more empathetic and accepting of everyone no matter their skin color, race, religion, or ability. The books that will be added to our book club library are from authors of color (Black, Indigenous, Muslim, Indian, Asian, etc) because I want my students to appreciate all cultures different from their own. I want my students of color to see themselves as characters and authors. Last but not least I want them to have rich conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion.
