As a history teacher, I have made a conscious effort to provide my students with rich supplemental reading material that gives perspectives other than the dominant "winners" narrative often found in our history textbooks. However, those sources are more difficult to find and are often written in language that is inaccessible for my students (particularly my English Language Learners). Having a thoroughly researched, equity-focused, and accessible history text would save me hundreds of hours of preparation time and allow my students to share a common reading experience. Howard Zinn's "A Young People's History of the United States" focuses on the experiences of historically marginalized people in the creation of the United States, a perspective that is sorely needed in every 8th grade history classroom. My students are active and interested in the social justice movements currently surging across our country, and I believe that they deserve the opportunity to read about the historical context of so many of our social issues.
