I teach 8th grade in NYC and 99% of my students are students of color that have been traditionally under-represented in higher level mathematics. It's not ability holding them back, it's access. Particularly in low-income communities of color, math and Algebra 1 are a gatekeeper preventing kids from having access to curriculum that would truly prepare them for college and beyond. They don't have a chance to develop true math literacy. Math is a Civil Right. My co-teacher and I have worked hard to get our school to offer Algebra 1 to 8th graders that feel ready. We are excited to offer this and leave it open to anyone who is willing to do the work and try. Then they can start high school ready for Geometry and move all the way up to Calculus as seniors if they desire. In NY, to truly pass Algebra 1, you have to pass the Algebra 1 Regents Exam. On this exam they can use a pre-approved graphing calculator. They can't use a app, or anything but a physical calculator. However, they are expensive and our community has been hit hard by COVID. We would love to be able to get this project funded so they can have access to approved TI-84 Graphing Calculators. The sooner we can get these in their hands, the more comfortable they can become as they use it to access the mathematics. They will be able to use it in class and beyond, when they take Geometry, Algebra 2, etc. They can even use it on the SAT. You will be helping students unlock an entire world they may not otherwise have access to. If fewer than 25 take the Algebra class we will store the extras for the next year's Algebra cohort. Thank you!
