While undergoing phased reopening of the economy due to COVID-19, the Louisiana Department of Education has deemed it unsafe for vocal music to continue. I have many students who will be discouraged to learn that they won’t be able to sing together for an undefined amount of time. To help with this transition and to continue their musical learning, a class set of ukuleles will be an invaluable teaching tool. They will learn the basic elements of music theory, sight-reading and harmony through learning these instruments in the classroom and give themselves a way to accompany their own singing at home. I hope to showcase their leaning in future concerts when we are given the wonderful privilege of singing together again.
