For the following school year, I want my students to engage with books in the classroom that have characters that represent them! It is important that the voices of people of all backgrounds and ethnicities are amplified and that they see themselves represented. Children's picture books are one of the most powerful forms of representation, as images of all types of people and cultures activate the imagination and help foster respect for diversity and empathy for others. Having books that are representative of my students will allow me to have more meaningful read alouds that will be used to teach acceptance, social skills, comprehension and reading skills, and inclusion. Representation helps marginalized people feel visible and enables people to envision possibilities for their own lives that previously seemed impossible! I want my students feel like they are lovable, smart, capable, and worthy of being seen by reading stories and literature where they are positively depicted and adequately represented. Diversity and inclusiveness are both essential to literature! Please consider helping me expand my classroom library to be inclusive of all students! Whether school resumes in person, online, or in a blended format, please know these books will be put to good use. Thank you and I am welcome to any suggestions you may have to continue to create an inclusive library!
