My project this year is building our classroom library. As an ELA teacher, we read A Lot! I use books as both Mentor Texts and Novels start to finish to teach our standards. As the teacher of the gifted (not gifted teacher), I have the pleasure of teaching my students for multiple years. This allows me to watch them grow not only in their knowledge of reading skills, but also in their love for reading. There is nothing more fulfilling than seeing students lounge on pillows, beanbags and benches soaking up a good book. The list of books I have compiled for Donors Choose will be used first as mentor texts then find its way to our classroom library for all to enjoy. These books were chosen specifically for 2nd grade. Although I have taught 2nd grade social studies and science in the past, this year is my first year teaching them ELA. Because of this, our classroom library is short on 2nd grade books. I hope this is the beginning to building our classroom library so that it is filled with all genres and levels. My prayer is that every student has multiple books to choose from and enjoy.
