I am looking to build my library with more diverse literature to help guide our discussions as I help these amazing human beings navigate what is ahead. I want to create an environment where all students feel valued and heard. When children see themselves in the books they read, like a mirror that reflects what they look like, what their family life is like, and what their culture is like they feel valued. When they also see others through books, like looking through a window, they are able to learn empathy and understanding for other people and learn about other families and cultures broadening their background knowledge and understanding of the world around them. This is such an important time for my students to learn about themselves, those around them, and those outside their bubble. Books bring you to places you haven’t been and teach you about moments in history you did not experience. They open our eyes and spark our curiosity. Through these books and the discussions that come from them my students will be able to see how they are unique individuals as are all the people around them. Books are the foundation of my classroom and these resources will help me to facilitate important conversations with my students but I need your help to diversify my library so that my students see themselves in the mirrors but also learn about others through the windows!
