Middle school students bury their noses in social media, not in books. Although the classics will always hold their place in literature, books that reflect the ways young readers look, feel and sound have a better chance of engaging my students. My students do not like to read aloud because of their lack of prosody. In reading, prosody refers to the expressiveness, intonation, rhythm, and emphasis given to words and sentences when reading out loud. Prosody is a key component in reading fluency. The best way to increase prosody, vocabulary, and comprehension is to put books in hand that students want to read. There are a wealth of Young Adult (YA) books by authors of color that are written with topics and issues my students are interested in. Having a class set of Mexican WhiteBoy by Matt de la Peña, would be a welcomed addition to my classroom bookshelf. --Thank you.
