Choice is good. We all want to be able to choose something that suits us. My project will give my students multiple choices of independent reading books. They will be able to find something that speaks to them and be able to find themselves in a book. In her TED Talk, Grace Lin said to make sure children have books that are mirrors and books that are windows "because if you do, you’re setting a path for self-worth and empathy – and that is a brick road worth following." I want my students to be able to see themselves and books, but I also want them to be able to act with compassion toward others. A diverse classroom library will help me do that.
