Every year, I set out to teach students everything they need to know to be successful. However, they often teach me way more than I teach them. This year, I want to do better for my diverse learners. While giving my students a window into other cultures and backgrounds is one of my goals, it is also more than that. Additionally, I want a place where my fast finishers, wiggle worms, hands-on learners, and kids who need to be challenged will thrive. This project is all about helping every student see that there is a place for them in my classroom and that they belong. The set of picture books I have chosen will help me teach lessons during language arts and morning meetings that will help students grow in their understandings of other cultures, others with learning disabilities, people who come from poverty, and social-emotional needs such as anger and anxiety. The materials such as the variety of building blocks, dominoes, foam balls, Play-Doh, etc. will be used to create STEM kits for students. Not only are they a developmentally appropriate way to provide engineering tasks for elementary students, but they are also a way to meet the needs of my fast finishers, students who need a challenge, or my students who need to stay busy in constructive ways. I can use these bins to meet the needs of students with IEPs, students seeking calming strategies, students who need to be challenged beyond our curriculum, and really any learner! All of the materials in this project will help students from various backgrounds and learning styles see themselves represented in my classroom. They will help build a sense of community and understanding for others and help all learners to thrive.
