As an educator, I understand that I play an important role in the development of my students' present and future. It is my responsibility to not only teach them the curriculum but also to teach them how to be positive and productive citizens in their community. If we want a better tomorrow, we MUST invest in our youth and our schools. I feel it is my duty to have literature in my classroom that reflects the diversity of my students and the world around them. My goal is to purchase fiction and nonfiction books that bring more diversity to our classroom library. If students are able to see themselves in the books they hear and read, it empowers them and makes them feel important. In addition, if students are able to hear and read books with people who are different than them, they become more aware of the beauty and importance of diversity. Please help me build a more inclusive classroom library so that my students have access to a variety of cultures and ideas and so that we can use them as prompts to have meaningful discussions to build future leaders. "Reading is essential for those who seek to rise about the ordinary."
