Learning a foreign language is difficult. It requires commitment and practice, a lot of practice! But it does not need to be boring or tedious. One of the ways to make language learning more enjoyable is through reading authentic texts, literature. Reading is a great language learning tool because it reinforces vocabulary acquisition, teaches vocabulary in an engaging and authentic context (not just part of a list), and provides many repetitions and reinforcement of the most frequently used and useful words. More importantly, reading is fun! It opens the door to so many possibilities. My plan is to provide each of my Spanish 4 students with a copy of this book so that they can read it at home. We will use these modified classics of Spanish literature to provide a context for exploring Spanish history and geography. We will also read them to explore and compare cultural perspectives, practices and products. Finally students will write their own works of fiction (in Spanish, of course) to reflect their own reality.
