WJH suffered tragic student losses in the Spring of 2018. We had many therapy dog teams volunteer in our building, and the human impact was undeniable. The dogs were highly requested and visited so frequently that the need arose to create a system to see them so there weren’t too many kids visiting at one time. After that, a team of teachers developed a plan to support our students through a school-employed facility dog. During our research, we learned the many academic benefits, in addition to the social and emotional benefits that we witnessed the year before. This summer, Dani came into our lives. Dani is a school resources dog at WJH whose mission is to support student learning activities, sensory processing, and social and emotional wellness. Dani has 2 years of service dog training through PawPADS, a service dog non-profit in Lakeville, MN. She has learned over 80 cues ranging from accessibility, sensory support, social/emotional support, and companionship. Thanks to Hopkins Education Foundation, Dani was adopted by the school district and will work in West Junior High full-time when we return to school in person. HEF's generous donation covers Dani's training and initial expenses. We are in need of some supplies to offset the cost of her continued employment at West to support students social and emotional well-being, such as training treats, beds, and kennels for her classroom assignments, and hygiene supplies for dog and students. Dani is practicing what she knows, and she is so excited to meet all of our students! Through her sweet personality and work ethic, she will leave a lasting stamp on the school community.
