My students always come to class ready to learn no matter what is going on around them. I see them writing in their notebooks, completing daily classwork, homework, and assessments online, and listening intently when their teachers or peers are speaking. I noticed from day one however when they were asked to share an answer or read a page from our class book there was mayhem on their line. Students can't learn what they can't hear, and they can't say what can't be heard. For many of my students, in-person school was an escape and a safe place and they no longer have that safe haven. When asked in a discussion students revealed that they had 2-9 siblings. Some of them have siblings on their laps as they learn because "Mom is at work." My students deserve the chance to get their education free from distractions because they shouldn't have to feel embarrassed unmuting themselves to answer a simple question.
