We don’t know what this upcoming school year holds, but I am eager to get this learning party started. As a 4th grade ELA teacher in Texas, I have the task of growing great readers AND writers. I want to combine the two by using various mentor sentences to lay the foundation for both core subjects. Whether we are in the classroom or learning from a distance, I want to provide my students with great literature and simultaneously showing great example sentences. Despite being in an upper grade level, my students love picture books. I love that a good picture can teach social-emotional learning, kindness, empathy, leadership, and can just make you laugh. My students will be able to check out these books so they can have access to literature at home. The majority of my students do not have the ability to buy books, so I would like to have my own library for them to check out from. I also will use these books to pull great sentences from. I have seen tremendous improvement in their writing AND reading skills when I focus on the great grammar and syntax found in children’s books. My goal is to further that with an incredible library to chose from! Please consider donating picture books to my classroom library — my students and I would greatly appreciate it!
