Cubbie bins can make a big difference in a special education classroom. Bin stations will help with organization. Each student will be assigned a color that will be used throughout the room; this helps with independence, scheduling, and consistency which is so important in a special needs classroom. Colored bins also make it much easier for students to remember their color rather than a number or initials. Bins help keep the super hectic times of the day such as morning unpacking when students are putting their items away more organized. Students can be more independent during these times. Also, bins are used for independent work activities again helping each student become a more independent learner. Bins can be used in so many ways and are extremely helpful in meeting the needs of all the many diverse learners in a special needs classroom. I have developed many new learning bins that provide hands-on individualized activities with visual supports and break down each skill into smaller steps until mastery. These activities can be used in discreet trial instruction.
