As part of my school counseling program, I teach students strategies for setting academic goals, improving their social and emotional wellness, and planning for an exciting postsecondary life. I do this by counseling individually, in small groups, and through classroom lessons. This project is a lot bigger than folders. Folders will help my students organize the materials they receive in classroom counseling lessons, but their greater purpose is as vehicles for self-discovery. Over time, my students will be able to see their development and growth reflected in the activities we do in classroom lessons, which will grow their academic capability, self-confidence, and resiliency. What's more, when they move on to high school, they will take their counseling portfolios with them for ongoing use and reflection.
