My 1st grade students LOVE books. Some of our favorite memories are gathering together on the carpet to read or sharing a great book with a buddy during centers. I ask my first graders to make connections to the texts we read and visualize the stories like a movie in their minds, but this is difficult if time after time they are not seeing their own beautiful selves reflected in those stories. This is same when working on writing strategies, especially writing with a style that feels and sounds like you. Without great examples of culturally rich texts, it is challenging to capture all of the ways children of many races and cultures share experiences. By donating to this project, you will help expand the classroom library and mentor texts used daily in my classroom so that ALL of my students see and feel themselves through the books we read. Even as instruction moves to a virtual format temporarily during Covid-19, these texts will be with me to use for reading and writing instruction. Please help my students grow in their experiences as readers, writers and diverse learners who respect one another.
