My 1st grade students come to my classroom from a Kindergarten room filled with hands-on play based learning toys/activities. They have "choice time" with pretend play, blocks, craft supplies, etc. In my 1st/2nd grade classroom there are a few play based learning toys on a small shelf. My goal is to be able to provide my students with some STEM bins filled with items that encourage imagination, creativity, fine motor practice and most importantly brain building activities. These bins would be used as a "soft start" morning activity for students to start the morning off with hands-on learning. In these bins I would like to include materials such as: various types of building blocks, lacing letters, magnetic tiles, building sets, balancing toys and much more. My plan is to make at least 20-30 bins to give students many different tactile experiences. I have seen the difference that hands-on activities make on student growth and I am excited to get these STEM bins assembled and in my classroom!!
