My students need access to a variety of authors and main characters who do not look like them. Looking at my curriculum after the horror of George Floyd's death, I realized too many of the books they read are by white people, about white people. This is no longer good enough. These books will allow me to add more diversity into my school year, which will go a long way into broadening their perspective and ideas about the world...and how they fit into it. These books are not only about POC, but they are written by POC. It is important we amplify their voices. Also, I have added books about LGBTQ kids, as we need to be hearing their stories as well. They all have value and I am excited to bring this new unit to my 7th graders.
