My classroom library has the ability to inspire students and pique their curiosity while also helping increase student reading proficiency. Many of my students continue to face gaps in reading proficiency. It is my job to make sure that these gaps are filled and students have all the tools they need to be successful. Reading proficiency is a gateway into future success and opportunities.
I want my students to see themselves in the protagonists within the books that they are reading. Books that highlight and reflect student identity promote self esteem. I want my students to become engrossed in books that motivate them and encourage them to follow their dreams. I want my students to see themselves within the heroes and heroines of the books they are reading.
In addition, there are a series of books that target social-emotional learning. As a school we have made great strides in incorporating SEL throughout our daily schedule. I want to use these texts to help enhance my students' understanding of their emotions. Every week we focus on a new emotion or feeling and discuss this emotion in-depth, I want to use the texts on my list to support these discussions and provide examples for students.
Finally, I have included a rug and pillows to make my library more comfortable for my students. I want my classroom library a place where students want to visit. I want students to grow to love reading and seek out the classroom library as a safe, welcoming, warm environment.
