94% of our students receive free or reduced lunches, which is 51% higher than the state average. Almost 40% of our students are ESOL, which means they come to us speaking another language other than English. As an ESOL teacher I provide small group instruction to students who are struggling with their language acquisition. I also provide in class support to classroom teachers. These students struggle most with reading and writing. I find it challenging to find books that they can read and that they are interested in. These struggling students need books and text that they can relate to and will draw them in. We work hard every day to become better readers and my hope for them is that one day they will love reading as much as I do. I want them to be successful not only in school, but also in their lives.
