Turning pen and pencil projects on a lathe is a great introductory learning experience for students new to wood shop. Students are able to learn about different wood species, how to measure and layout material, and most importantly, how to safely operate machinery. Unfortunately for our school, the lathes are outdated, haven't been used for years, and don't have the necessary guarding/shielding in place to meet modern safety requirements. The smaller benchtop lathe we are requesting is a safer tool and less intimidating to students who are new to operating machinery and equipment.
