One of the most difficult challenges for a middle school social studies teacher is making history, especially foreign history, relevant to students. We also have the task of supporting our language arts teachers by promoting literacy in our classrooms. I hope to use to the novel A Long Walk to Water to achieve both. Students will be able to read first-hand accounts of life in war-torn Sudan, from the perspective of two young people the same age as themselves. The two main characters, from two different time periods, both experience significant hardships at a young age - the boy was separated from his family during the war in 1985 and the girl has to walk several miles every day to collect water for her family in 2008. In class, we will read, analyze, and make connections to the recent historic events in the Sudan. We will also take the opportunity to discuss overarching themes in the novel that the students can apply to their own lives, including the various causes of divisions between people and the potential for anyone to overcome obstacles in life if they have the drive and desire to do so. Through reading this novel, I hope to not only help students better comprehend life in the Sudan during its modern history, but also hope to help them find ways to apply the major themes of the book to their own lives, that create empathy and understanding for others.
