I am a second year teacher and one of the many goals that I had going in to my first year of teaching was to try and pass on my passion for reading to my 5th graders. It is extremely important to me that my classroom has a diverse library full of different types of books, from chapter books to graphic novels, but also that the characters represented in those books reflect the diversity of the students in my class.
I am a firm believer in "you can't be what you can't see," so I made it a priority my first year to start building a library for my students full of characters and historical figures that look like them and that they can relate to. I want them to be able to pick up a book and feel proud of their culture, ancestors, or gender. I want them to be entertained and picture themselves as amazing main characters going on epic adventures. I want to give them a classroom library that they are excited to browse during their daily silent reading time.
While our library is off to an awesome start due to donations my first year, I would love the supplies to create a more organized and easily navigated library as well as a few more books to keep my collection growing. Bins and a more organized and compartmentalized bookshelf will help students to find what they are looking for with ease and I have chosen books that I know they will love based on my observations from last year and the books my students would ask for.
