Imagine walking into a classroom filled with books that have characters on the covers that look just like you! As you settle down into a cozy beanbag chair to open the first book, you recognize that one of the characters has the same name as your cousin. A picture of a family, gathered around the table, eating tamales, reminds you of your family at Christmas time. I'm looking to grow my classroom library with books that my students can not only relate to on a personal level, but also to promote a classroom community of understanding, tolerance and acceptance . Second graders are just beginning to transition from reading to decode language to reading for content and, most importantly, enjoyment! It is vital that they read about historical events and cultural traditions that reflect their personal experiences and backgrounds. These books will not only be used as read-aloud mentor texts, when introducing a social studies topic, but also as a way to enhance our social-emotional learning curriculum. Often times, our school library is very limited in its offerings to support these subject areas, so having easily accessible texts in the classroom for my students would be ideal. They frequently love to partner read or independently re-read books that we've read aloud as a class!
