Throughout their 5 years in our art room, artists will learn through hand's on experience about the world-changing technology of printmaking. From making monoprints with gelli plates to Gyotaku (fish printing), and relief prints to designing 3D prints, artists will take a deep dive into printmaking - where art and technology meet. In primary grades, students will start learning the process of printmaking by making monoprints with gelli plates and also Gyotaku fish prints. As students get older, we will build upon their basic knowledge of printmaking, adding to it with relief prints and ultimately taking their knowledge into the 21st century and beyond with 3D printing projects. Where would Andy Warhol be without PRINTMAKING? Where would any of us? The ever-evolving technology of printing has changed and continues to change our world. Books, money, art: our lives rely on printed material. These artists will experiment in-depth with various forms of printmaking, creating iterations, working to understand and apply this technology to their art. While making prints, artists need to think differently. They need to think about positive space AND negative space, how what they add or remove from their printing plate will change their work. They need to monitor and evaluate the consistency of the print medium. Working through these challenges early on will help them with more complicated applications and iterations later when they are using more advanced technologies. With the resources in our Print Maker Space, my students will benefit by having the right tools to help them explore this rich technology, expanding their understanding, vision and even the way they think. They will be print masters and makers.
