By giving my students a range of culturally diverse books, you are not only providing them with a positive view of themselves but also of those around them that they otherwise might not be exposed to. This instills a sense of belonging when students can see themselves and others reflected in the books they read. As well as STEM-related books to encourage their interests and engage in their curiosity to be hands-on and develop questioning skills. Through class meetings we can use these stories to have discussions about important leaders, making a difference, handling stress, working together, showing kindness, and being respectful. Young readers will gain an appreciation of other cultures, build unity with those who are different from them and become mindful citizens in our classroom and community. These stories will help empower students with the knowledge that they matter and can make a difference!
