This fall, my students will return to the classroom after months of being at home, and -- in those months -- they have seen our nation split over issues of racism, political posturing, etc. Authentic, unbiased conversations and readings (especially those representing typically marginalized authors/voices) will be key to helping them navigate a world of social media rhetoric and newsreels. Our first book of the semester will be "To Kill A Mockingbird," which has long been considered an American classic -- but a flawed classic as it only tells the story of systemic racism from one perspective; I want to pair this text with a modern memoir -- "Just Mercy" -- which focuses on the author's experience as a black man and lawyer, fighting a legal system built on racism and economic disparity. The remaining books on my list all represent the lives and backgrounds of my students ... voices that haven't always been allowed on bookshelves but who deserve to be there.
