Learning to sew engages students in meaningful skills taught in core subjects. Through sewing, students develop an understanding of the concepts of angles, direction, parallel, reflection, symmetry, proportion, similarity and estimation without realizing that they are thinking mathematically as they create their project. Students must read, interpret and follow directions when sewing. Project based learning which revolves around sewing projects leads to the development of problem solving and higher order thinking skills. "Stitching 2 Success" is food to the brain. Students will be taught the basics of sewing. They will be taught how to successfully utilize the tools required to create a project in this class. And then the fun begins. Students will be allowed to enhance, reinforce, or gain remediation in skills they have struggled with through the hands-on approach of sewing. The student will guide their learning pace while I as the teacher will simply facilitate and support the process. I along with my colleagues will begin to see motivation increase as students make a connection of real life, hands-on skills to core skills taught in regular classrooms. Other benefits will begin to emerge as we progress through the year. Students will learn a lifelong skill. They will develop a way to relieve stress. It will help debunk gender stereotypes. I will be able to teach resourcefulness and help students grow confidence. Through sewing students will have an opportunity to draw on their own creativity and develop patience and perseverance. Introducing sewing to my 7th grade students will impact their learning in every classroom they enter.
