I am going to be a first-year teacher this fall 2020. Now more than ever before, I see the importance of creating a literacy-rich environment that includes a wide range of diverse books from ALL backgrounds and walks of life. I want my students to feel empowered by diverse characters in high-quality children's books while allowing them to see through the windows of what others' lives are like. I don’t know what the future holds for the upcoming school year, but whether we will be doing distance learning or in-person, these books will be used throughout the school year and available for all students to read and enjoy! If we are unable to meet face-to-face in the fall, the students will not have access to our classroom library, so I plan to read these books aloud in daily video calls (i.e Zoom or Google Meets). As a class, we will work together on inclusion, empathy, equality, and justice.
