It is also our duty to voice stories of Civil Rights leaders and injustices in American history, such as the immigration experience and current fight for equality, which are often looked over in traditional curriculum. The books I'm requesting will grow the classroom libraries of 11 teachers and 240 students in grades TK, Kindergarten, 1st grade & 2nd grade. Our students embody boundless potential to learn and thrive in a time where they are historically underrepresented. These books will be used to compliment our current ELA curriculum and will enhance or refrain topics such as America: Then & Now and Civil Rights Heroes. I strongly believe that that young children thrive when they see themselves represented in the books they read.
