It is known that "young children who are exposed to certain early language and literacy experiences usually prove to be good readers later in life." My students have learning differences that make acquiring the skills to read challenging. Learning to read is a rigorous process and I seek to associate reading with joy, discovery, and passion. Having a cozy and inviting classroom reading nook will help my students build a positive schema around reading. Having a bookcase, book storage bench, storage cubes, a carpet, and cozy materials will provide my students with a comfortable, organized, and accessible reading nook in the classroom! I want to build better readers by making an inviting reading nook within the classroom where students can access materials independently and read from our classroom library. This reading nook will be used as a space for interactive read alouds, shared reading, and independent reading opportunities. While reading, students will have opportunities to answer higher order questions, apply decoding skills, and participate in academic discourse with peers. I seek to motivate my students to participate in reading by creating a reading nook that is comfortable and appealing to them!
