Traditionally, the English language classroom limits students to the singular novel available via the curriculum. This can develop resentment for reading as students struggle through content that does not appeal to them. Literature circles allow students the freedom to choose their reading adventure, while also providing them the social benefit of discussing important ideas with their peers. One essential question we tackle in the classroom is what does our response to the conflict say about us, and one way we answer this question is by reading experiences of those who have faced hardship. These books will challenge students and inspire intriguing discussions on the myriad natures of hardship, and the tenacity of human nature. These literature circles are intended to provide student choice, develop empathy and grow a community of critical learners.
