All students need books that mirror their life experiences back to them, and books that function as windows into other cultures, lifestyles and socio-economic realities. Our current classroom library is not as diverse as it needs to be. The books I am requesting would help to provide my black, brown, working-class and poor students with an opportunity to see themselves in books, and an opportunity for white, middle-class students to gain insight into other people's lives. This project was conceived as a result of my Master of Literacy coursework. It will help to mitigate some of the class and race issues that are prevalent in literacy education within my classroom and my school.
