When my younger students come into class, they need a comfortable place to sit besides the dirty, dusty, cold tile floor. Our custodians do a great job of cleaning, don't get me wrong, but an Art room floor is not always the cleanest place as you can imagine. Being close to the teacher, near the board, is especially important to engage the youngest students. This is where we begin every class, and where I often incorporate literature into our Art lessons. Having younger students at tables, which can be 20 feet away, lends itself to distraction. This particular rug is large enough for all of my classes, and gives each student their own personal space to sit.
