These notebooks are blank canvases for creative minds as we prepare to explore the poetry of Gwendolyn Brooks. Effective journaling involves more than words; pictures bring thoughts to life and make learning visible. Image-based journaling supports all students -- especially visual and kinesthetic learners -- and allows students to step away from computer screens and demonstrate their learning by hand. Poetry and image-based journaling are natural companions. A single line can spark an imaginative map, a unique representation of an object or animal, and be the jumping-off point for deeper thinking about language. By the end of the unit, students will have created a book of learning and a valuable resource for developing in-depth writing. Students will also be able to practice speaking skills if distance learning continues; they can narrate a video tour of their journals to share their thinking with me.
