One of the things I LOVE about my school is the focus that is put on creating life-long readers. Not surprisingly, that's not always easy! I have been given the opportunity to teach an elective to my sixth graders and I decided to focus on the work of author Jason Reynolds. I teach to a diverse group of students and it's important to expose them to different voices in the literature they read.
Jason Reynolds gives his readers relatable stories in a familiar voice. He's often my go-to when a student says they don't like to read or can't find something to hold their interest. His stories can make you laugh out loud, create vivid images in your head while reading and sometimes move you to tears.
The "Reading, Writing, Reynolds" elective will last 13 weeks. Over the course of the class, we will read Jason's book "Ghost," which is the first book of 4 in his Track series. We will focus on voice, plot, characterization and writing style. Additionally, reading a novel as a class is a great way to practice fluency, vocabulary as well as working on discussion techniques.
