These books will not only help my students improve their reading comprehension skills but will broaden their minds by teaching them about different cultures, abilities, and the importance of inclusion. I have chosen books that engage students with their compelling characters and identifiable story lines and themes while also teaching them about a diverse group of kids. In Pam Munoz-Ryan's award winning, Esperanza Rising, my students will learn about Mexican culture, the history of the Mexican migrant experience in our home state of California, and the social class system that initially separates Esperanza and Miguel.
