In my classroom, we spend the first 10-15 minutes of most class days reading independently. Students also participate in book clubs with each other once a semester or so. The purpose of this is not only for students to become better readers and to better meet the standards taught in class, but also to become lifelong readers who see the importance of books. Although teacher-assigned texts are often necessary, students (especially teens) will most likely not fall in love with reading unless they are given relevant and diverse books to choose from. That's what this project is aiming to achieve!
