The girls and boys in my Robotics Club want to learn to build and code robots! Students in the club plan to participate in the First Lego League competition for the very first time! Lego Education recommends one EV3 kit for every two or three students. EV3 kits include a programmable brick, special sensors (touch, light, ultrasonic), motors, connectors, gears and Lego type building pieces. With three EV3 kits, all the students on the team will get plenty of coding experience. Providing three EV3 kits for the team will allow more hands-on building and programming time for each student on the team. It will also reduce the materials that students need to share (especially considering COVID-19 related concerns). If remote learning continues, individual students will be able to take turns using the EV3 kits. Once students return to the classroom environment, they will be able to work in small groups of three. They will get the opportunity to try many different robot building ideas and test multiple coding iterations. Rigorous, hands-on, engaging STEM activities should not stop during this time. My students are ready to learn!
