My school is incredibly diverse. Refugees, immigrants, English Language Learners, and more! The cultural tapestry is often overwhelming to keep up with, and it’s difficult for my students to find representation in the books that are available to them. My main goal in my second year of teaching is simply to get them to read. So many other learning problems would be solved or lessened if these kids had greater exposure to reading, if they brought books home with them that they didn’t want to put down. Last year, I noticed the books that got picked up over and over again were, many times, the ones that had covers with kids that looked like them. They also loved bite sized biographies that helped them gain confidence in their reading. Reading every day will improve their academic performance in every subject, and I want to make it fun. Not just fun, but life-changing.
