The books I have chose are selected for their SEL content. The past year was extremely hard and trying for most of my students. Most of them will enter school not having a chance to process their emotions. The stories I have chose can be used to discuss topics such as social emotional awareness, identifying emotions, and what to do with these emotions. By paring literature and SEL it will give the students strategies to handle the emotions of the pandemic.
During the pandemic I noticed that most of my students were not reading for pleasure or leisure. The only things they were reading were the mandatory readings for class lessons. I want to expand my library to be able to provide as many books as possible for my students to explore. I have found that the best way to engage students back into reading is through graphic novels. This leads the way to chapter books and other levels of literature. I want them to choose books they will love and to keep reading through out the year!
