As a white teacher, I know that there are apparent physical differences between my students and myself. I am trying to educate myself about my own privilege that my students and their families do not have. One of these privileges I have often taken for granted include that characters in books often look like me and my family. I think getting books that represent a wide range of people, families and cultures can help my students better connect with books. I want my students to see themselves in the books, to gain confidence in themselves and in their places in our world. I want them to know that I see them for who they are. I think these books can be meaningful additions to our classroom and our school culture as a whole.

About my class
